Books

(At right): Five books  selected by well-known Indiana scholar Dr. Andrew Whitehead, with his discussion of why they are important.

The Power Worshippers: Inside the Dangerous Rise of Religious Nationalism, By Katherine Stewart (This is the basis for the film 'God and Country")

American Idolatry: How Christian Nationalism Betrays the Gospel and Threatens the Church, By Andrew L. Whitehead

Jesus and John Wayne: How White Evangelicals Corrupted a Faith and Fractured a Nation by  Kristin Kobes Du Mez.

Kingdom Coming: The Rise of Christian Nationalism by Michelle Goldberg

American Idolatry:  How Christian Nationalism Betrays the Gospel and Threatens the Church, by Andrew L. Whitehead.

This book is particularly relevant to us in Indiana, as it includes the moving story of how the author grew up in a small Indiana community as a conservative evangelical Christian, and found a new way of thinking in courses at Purdue (so motivating to many of us who are teachers!). He has become the leading sociologist studying Christian Nationalism, and is now at IU Indianapolis. - Jane Frankenberger

The Exvangelicals: Loving, Living, and Leaving the White Evangelical Church  by Sarah McCammon.

"An intimate window into the world of American evangelicalism. Fellow exvangelicals will find McCammon’s story both startlingly familiar and immensely clarifying, while those looking in from the outside can find no better introduction to the subculture that has shaped the hopes and fears of millions of Americans."

The Kingdom, The Power, and the Glory: American Evangelicals in an Age of Extremism by Tim Alberta of the New York Times.

Preparing for War: The Extremist History of Christian Nationalism and What Comes Next, by  Bradley Onishi
